The Southern Coast

Route 1 southeast of Reyjavik is also called the Ring Road, which encircles the island. Branch roads from Route 1 reach the coast, noteworthy for black lava sand beaches and small towns.

From Route 1, Route 39 reaches Porlakshofn, a coastal village of which a quick trip suggests there is not much to be said. Striking east along the coastal Route 34, one crosses the Olfusa River, Iceland's largest, and finds broad expanses of the aforementioned black sand beaches. No sunscreen needed on this July day; for that matter, not another soul to be seen.
